Now, With One of the Largest Deployments in UTOPIA Fiber’s History, Gigabit-Speed Internet Will Be Available to 80,000 Layton Residents

(Murray, UTAH March 12, 2020) – UTOPIA Fiber announced today it has completed its widely heralded Fiber-to-the-Home project in the City of Layton, Utah. Now, the city’s nearly 80,000 residents and businesses have access to the fastest internet speeds in the nation. Completion of the $23 million project, which began in July 2018, occurred officially today when the last fiber cable was successfully tested and UTOPIA Fiber began accepting orders for all areas in the city. Layton is now among the first cities in Utah—and in the nation—to be fully connected to fiber.

“Layton has always had the vision to anticipate what fiber would mean for its community,” said Roger Timmerman, Executive Director/CEO, UTOPIA Fiber. “Now, the city is reaping the benefits of city-wide fiber availability. This is particularly meaningful as Layton is one of UTOPIA Fiber’s 11 founding members.”

Layton residents will be able to get fiber internet services starting at $65/month for 250/250 Mbps and will have the option to choose speeds up to 10 Gbps (up to 100 Gbps for business) from 11 local providers—the fastest internet speeds in the nation.

“Fiber connectivity cements Layton City as a great place to live, work, and play,” said Alex Jensen, City Manager, City of Layton. “There’s been a huge wave of support from Layton residents, particularly in the last few years, who want the astonishing speed and capacity that UTOPIA Fiber service provides. As more new developments are built, we’ll be looking to expand the fiber network.”

Since 2009, the Layton project—like all other UTOPIA Fiber projects—has been funded and grown solely through subscriber revenue. About a third of Layton’s households have already signed up for the service, pushing UTOPIA Fiber’s residential subscribers to just shy of the 30,000 mark.

UTOPIA Fiber is an inter-local agency that provides Fiber-to-the-Home services in 14 Utah cities and commercial services in over 50. UTOPIA Fiber is an Open Access network, meaning that UTOPIA Fiber builds the infrastructure and allows private sector internet service providers (ISPs) to offer internet services through UTOPIA’s fiber lines.

Interested Layton residents and businesses can visit UTOPIAfiber.com for information on how to sign up for UTOPIA Fiber services.
