FIELD SERVICE QC and Training Specialist

JOB SUMMARY:

The Field Service QC and Training Specialist’s will ensure the highest quality standards in network cabling installations for all FTTX applications. This role focuses on fiber optic and copper cabling infrastructure, overseeing compliance with industry standards, project specifications, and safety regulations.

The QC and Training Specialist will verify project scope, inspect installations, and ensure all work meets performance and reliability requirements, helping to train both internal employees and contractors.

The QC and Training Specialist will look for and set up continuing education opportunities for employees to stay on top of the evolving communications industry.

The QC and Training Specialist will help identify areas both internally and externally where jobs fail on initial attempts and help reduce number of failures and relocations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conduct QA/QC inspections of network cabling projects to ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and customer requirements.
  • Perform job site inspections, report findings, and verify project scopes, including materials, equipment, and labor.
  • Supervise and guide cabling crews, ensuring efficiency and high-quality workmanship.
  • Collaborate with FSG managers to address deviations and recommend corrective actions.
  • Conduct pre- and post-installation quality checks to validate cable connections, terminations, and overall system functionality, identifying and resolving defects or deficiencies.
  • Develop and implement quality control procedures, guidelines, and checklists. Maintain detailed documentation of inspections and project progress.
  • Train and mentor FSG Technicians and Installation contractors to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Communication with Managers and contractors on quality concerns and installation issues
  • Participate in training and stay current with industry best practices, standards, and emerging technologies.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Possess a High School diploma or GED
  • Minimum 5 years of job-related experience which must have included supporting and installing network cables or fiber plant involving Internet, VoIP, or IPTV; OR and equivalent combination of job-related education/experience (substituting one year of post-secondary education/training for six months of experience.)
SUPERVISOR:
The Field Service QC and Training Specialist will report directly to the Senior Field Service Tech Manager.
SKILL SET:
  • Knowledge of fiber to the home (FTTH) construction and design including residential and business installation practices
  • Must be able to lift, carry, set up and climb 28-foot extension ladder
  • Must be able to lift and carry cable reels weighing up to 60 Lbs.
  • Must be able to use a bucket truck
  • Must be able to pass a color blindness test (Ishihara test)
  • Assist with asset inventory, asset tagging, data center audits or other inventory control procedures
  • Must be able to terminate CAT 5/6 cabling
  • Advanced proficiency with using an optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR)
  • Advanced proficiency with locating faults in fiber using red light, light meters, OTDR, etc.
  • Must be able to fiber splice loose & ribbon fiber
  • Must be able to break out large capacity fiber cables, ring cut and splice in enclosures, pigtail assemblies, patch panels, etc.
  • Configure residential premise equipment including consumer grade wireless routers.
  • Proficient with pulling cable through ladder rack, walls, conduit, etc.
  • Proficient with racking network equipment and fiber termination panels
  • Ability to operate power tools to be able to cut floor tiles and install equipment.
  • Ability to operate standard hand tools.
  • Ability to use software tools such as ticketing systems, chat and text systems, email systems, Microsoft Word and Excel or Google docs,
  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Ability to configure network devices including IP configuration and VLAN configuration
  • Advanced ability to install, configure, and maintain uninterruptible power supply systems (UPS)
CERTIFICATIONS:

BICSI Installer 2 Certification or similar certification preferred
Network+ Preferred
CCNA or NRS1 Certification preferred

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The Field Service QC and Training Specialist needs to understand and support UTOPIA’s mission. Perform tasks by written and verbal instruction. Meet high attendance and punctuality requirements. Accurately enter data into current operational systems to closeout work orders and tickets. Work with excel spread sheet and GIS mapping to resolve field discrepancies. Prep and prepare fiber optical cable to fusion splice then test with power meter and OTDR equipment. Possible shift work includes day, swing or graveyards and work weekends and holidays. Possible overtime is needed. Train and mentor other personnel as necessary. Perform other duties as directed.
