UTOPIA University: Upload vs Download Speeds
Hey everyone! Welcome back to UTOPIA University where we break down the internet in a way that actually makes sense. Today we’re going to be talking about one of the most misunderstood internet topics, download vs upload speeds.
Let’s start by talking about download speeds. Think of your internet like filling up a bowl with water. The bowl is your device, and the water is the data from your internet. The faster the water flows in, the faster you get what you need. Essentially, your download speed determines how fast you can receive data from the internet.
Now, let’s flip the script. Upload speeds are how fast you can send data to the internet, like uploading a YouTube video or even sending an email. Picture 2 bowls, one filled with water and the other one is empty. The bowl with water is your “device”, the other bowl is your “internet”. The speed in which the water flows in from the “device” to the “internet” is your upload speed. This is why upload speeds are super important for those who game, work from home, and even content creators. If your upload speeds are slow, then that’s going to cause your tasks to go slow, or possibly even freeze! Nobody wants that.
Most internet providers give you way more download speeds than upload speeds. This is because people typically did more downloading than uploading back in the day. But, with more people working from home and uploading content, we need that speed to be symmetrical, where the upload and download speeds are the same. Fiber internet, like UTOPIA Fiber, gives you just that- symmetrical speeds!
If you’re a casual internet user who just likes to browse and stream, download speeds are going to be your best friend. But, if you work from home, game online, and create content, then upload speeds are just as important. This is why fiber is the future, it gives you the best of both.
That’s a wrap on download and upload speeds! We hope you learned something new today. If you did, stay tuned for next month’s UTOPIA University post or follow us on youtube where we post the video version!
