UTOPIA University: Ditch Cable, Start Streaming

Are you still flipping through hundreds of channels just to find nothing? Let’s fix that. Today, we’re turning your tv into a streaming machine using the Roku. Your setup may be a little different depending on what device you have, but typically in the box you’ll find the Roku remote, the Roku stick, and a switching adapter. Let’s get started.

Step one: Plug the Roku stick into an HDMI port on your TV. If you’re wanting to use the switching adapter, simply plug one end into the Roku stick and the other directly into the wall. If you’re skipping the extender, just turn on your TV with its remote and switch to the HDMI port that the Roku stick is plugged into.

Source and Connection

After you’ve turned on your TV and switch to the HDMI input that your Roku is plugged into, insert the batteries into the Roku remote. The remote should then pair automatically. If it doesn’t, hold the pairing button inside the battery compartment for a few seconds.

Setting Up Your Roku

Now, let’s get this Roku connected. First things first, you choose your language. Then, it’ll redirect you to a Wi-Fi network page where you can choose your wireless network. After you’ve entered your password, Roku may download a few updates. This is normal and only takes a few minutes.

Creating a Roku Account

After you’ve connected to the Wi-Fi and the Roku updates have been downloaded, it’s time to sign in or create a Roku account. Follow the onscreen steps to do so. You’ll receive an email to verify your account and to finish setting things up. This allows you to install channels and manage your streaming services. You can do this on your phone or a computer, you just need access to your email.

Apps and Customization

From the home screen, select streaming channels. From here, you can browse or search which apps you want to download. All you have to do is select an app and choose add to channel. This will add it directly to the homepage on your Roku. If you click the little star button on your Roku remote, you can customize where your apps are. You can move your favorite ones to the top, and you can delete the apps that you don’t want. For further customization options, you can scroll down to settings. From here, you can check your network, remote, and devices, the theme that you want, and this will change the way that your Roku looks. You can also customize your wallpapers and the screen saver.

And just like that no cable box, no contracts, and no endless channel surfing, just streaming your way. Thanks for tuning in to this episode of UTOPIA University. See you next time!
