UTOPIA University: The Internet Speaks!

Hello everyone! Welcome to another episode of UTOPIA University. Today we’re going to be talking about some internet tech terms and what they actually mean. Let’s get right to it!

Gigabits Per Second

This is a way to measure the internet. Gigabit stands for one billion. So basically, the higher the gigabit speeds, the faster your internet is going to be.

Megabits Per Second

Mega equals one million. Megabits per second is another way internet speeds are measured. Megabit is not as fast as Gigabit, but it’s still plenty fast for faster downloads, streaming, etc.

Bit

A bit is made up of ones or zeros. A bit by itself is very very very small. But, if you get millions or billions of bits, well there you have the internet.

Byte

A byte is made up of 8 bits. Bits and bytes are related. As we previously talked about megabits and gigabits, you also have megabytes and gigabytes. A megabyte being a million bytes and a gigabyte being a billion bytes.

Bandwidth

Bandwidth is how much your internet connection can handle. Bandwidth is like I-15, traffic is like data. The more lanes you have, the more data you can get through it.

ISP

ISP stands for internet service provider. The ISP is the one that actually provides your internet service to your home or business. They’re different from UTOPIA Fiber. UTOPIA Fiber provides the fiber connectivity whereas the ISP is the one that’s actually providing your service.

Fiber

When you hear the term fiber, you have to think of fiber-optic cable. It provides internet service to your home or business. It means faster speeds, lower latency, and a reliable connection. It’s also a lot faster than a copper cable.

Router

A router is a device that takes the internet into your home and then shares it with all the devices that you have there like your tv, your computers, your phone, everything.

FTTH

FTTH stands for fiber-to-the-home. That means a fiber-optic cable is run from the outside directly into your home and provides all your internet functions.

That wraps up today’s UTOPIA University episode. Thanks for tuning in today, see you next time!
