Field Service/Locate Tech (Washington County)

Job Type: Full-Time. This position will be located in Santa Clara, UT. Training will be held in Salt Lake County.

General Job Description:

The Field Service/Locate Technician’s primary responsibilities are to monitor and maintain the operational infrastructure, respond to network outages, and assist with installations of business and residential customers. This includes service calls, install issues, repairs and service provider issues. Assist in making sure the network is 99.999% reliable. Interact with internal personnel such as Customer Service Reps, Network Engineers, NOC Techs and management staff. Construction and installation contractors will also rely on the Field Service/Locate Tech personnel as they request assistance. Support service providers on the UTOPIA network.

Other responsibilities are to monitor and maintain operational and physical outside plant infrastructure; using mechanical/technical equipment to accurately locate underground facilities, properly marking the location of said infrastructure, completing the necessary paperwork and photographing each locate. Interact with both UTOPIA internal personnel, as well as the external public. Construction and installation contractors may also rely on the Field Service/Locate Tech personnel as they call in for locate assistance. Inspect damage caused by third party entities.

Under limited supervision, maintain a daily route and be the first response for service calls, installs, repairs and service provider issues.  Fulfill network maintenance and other related tasks when required.  Provide after-hours support for network emergency response when required.  Work with contractors providing quality control reports, field inspection and creating follow up appointments. Inside and outside wiring for internet, video, and telephone for various services providers. Some travel required.

Understand and support UTOPIA’s mission. Perform tasks by written and verbal instruction. Meet high attendance and punctuality requirements. Accurately enter data into current operational systems to closeout work orders and tickets.  Monitor locate system tools to ascertain issues that come up. Perform other duties as directed.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Possess a High School diploma/GED or higher education
  • Minimum 1 year of job related experience which must have included supporting a network cable or fiber plant involving Internet, VoIP, or IPTV; OR an equivalent combination of job-related education/experience (substituting one year of post-secondary education/training for six months of experience.)

Selection Factors:

  • Knowledge of fiber to the home (FTTH) construction and design, including residential and business installation practices
  • Lift, carry, setup and climb 28 foot extension ladder
  • Lift and carry cable reels weighing up to 60 Lbs.
  • Pass a color blindness test (Ishihara test)
  • Assist with asset inventory, asset tagging, data center audits or other inventory control procedures
  • Terminate CAT 5/6 cabling
  • Proficient with using an optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR)
  • Proficient with locating faults in fiber using red light, light meters, OTDR, etc.
  • Fiber splice loose & ribbon fiber
  • Configure residential premise equipment including consumer grade wireless routers
  • Proficient with pulling cable through ladder rack, walls, conduit, etc.
  • Proficient with racking network equipment and fiber termination panels
  • Operate power tools to be able to cut floor tiles and install equipment
  • Operate standard hand tools
  • Use software tools such as ticketing systems, chat and text systems, email systems, Microsoft Word and Excel or Google docs,
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent communication, documentation and written skills
  • Install, configure, and maintain uninterruptible power supply systems (UPS)
  • Use company provided locate equipment and technology to accurately locate underground utilities
  • Knowledge of fiber, hand hole and conduit infrastructure
  • Read maps and blueprints

  • Determine efficient route to each locate in rural and urban areas

Physical/Environment Factors

  • Work shift includes day, swing, or graveyards including weekends and holidays; some overtime required.
  • Must be able to lift 60 Lbs
  • Must be able to lift, carry, setup and climb 28 foot extension ladder
  • Work in all kinds of outdoor environments regardless of weather conditions.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for periods of time up to and exceeding 60 minutes.
