Xiaotong Wu (or “X” as we like to call him) works here at UTOPIA Fiber as a member of our incredible GIS team. The Beijing native started working here in February 2015 as a Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist. GIS is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present spatial or geographical data. As a member of our GIS team, X is responsible for constantly maintaining our GIS database.

Before working at UTOPIA Fiber, X worked in China for 8 years after graduating from college. He then came to the U.S. with his family, studied GIS and started his career here. “I first heard of UTOPIA when I was shopping for internet for my home,” he said. “I had never worked in a fiber industry before. When a job opportunity came up, I felt I would be a good fit due to my experience working with municipal and parcel/address based GIS databases.” He couldn’t have been more right. X does an amazing job and fits right in.

When X began working here over a year ago, he immediately noticed the closeness among everyone at the office. “It’s like a big family, not a corporation.” He especially loves picking our Planning Director, Jamie Brotherton’s brain when he has questions. “I can’t think of one thing Jamie doesn’t know about our network,” he says. “He is able to provide the correct answers, even when our data has been recorded incorrectly.”

UTOPIA has been through some difficult times in the past, but X wants people to know that we have passed the turning point and left the baggage behind. “Everyone here is working hard to provide the best service,” he states. “Our options can fit many different demands and I expect UTOPIA will eventually serve more towns and cities with more service packages.”

When X isn’t updating our systems, he likes to watch sports, read books (mostly in Chinese), and enjoys watching and listening to an ancient style of stage performance called Beijing Opera. He can speak Mandarin and has watched all FIFA World Cups since 1982.

X is one of the most hardworking, talented and friendly people around and we love the privilege of being able to work alongside him every day. Thank you X!
