Did you know that there is a difference between your UTOPIA Equipment and your router? If you don’t, don’t worry we are here to help you understand the ins and outs of your UTOPIA Fiber equipment.

When you get UTOPIA Fiber installed in your home we install what we call an Optical Network Terminal or ONT for short. ONTs are modem-like devices that look like a router but are compatible with the fragile fiber line. It is important to remember that while the ONT looks like a router it does not function as a router and you will need to provide your own router to connect to the ONT to complete your internet setup. (If you need router suggestions check out our list of recommendations here)

Before we go into the Do’s and Don’ts of your ONT unit you’ll need to determine which model you have installed in your home. We have two type of ONTs installed in homes.

First we have a Zhone:

Zhones are our newer model of ONT and will be a white or black flat rectangle. (see image below). For detailed information on Zhone lights and ports, click here.

NOTE: The way we configure our Zhones, the ‘Internet’ light is never on, so don’t panic when you see yours is off. It’s supposed to be that way.

How to power cycle your Zhone:

Push the On/Off button or unplug your power cord, wait one minute, then push the button again or plug your power cord back in. DO NOT PRESS THE RESET BUTTON.

The second type is an Allied Telesis/Telesyn:

The Allied Telesis device is our older model of ONT and will be white with a curved edge. (see image below). For detailed information on Allied Telesis lights and ports, click here.

Important note: If you have an Allied Telesis model, it is probably outdated and we highly recommend giving us a call so we can upgrade your equipment. If you are worried about the cost of upgrading, have no fear! Upgrading your equipment is free of charge!

How to power cycle your Allied Telesis:

To power cycle your Allied Telesis, unplug the power cable, wait one minute, then plug the power cable back in. DO NOT PRESS THE RESET BUTTON.

Now that you know what model of ONT you have in your home and how to power cycle it we can go over some important Dos and Don’ts when it comes to your UTOPIA Fiber equipment.

Do’s:

Restart your router first and check to make sure you are up to date on payments.

Contact your ISP before power cycling your equipment.

Power cycling or rebooting. Use this as a last resort, If you power cycle your UTOPIA Fiber equipment, it will lose its logs making it very difficult for UTOPIA Fiber or your ISP to further troubleshoot any issues.

Don’ts:

DO NOT Press the Reset button on your UTOPIA Fiber equipment. This will erase the configuration on your equipment and may require a technician to come out and fix it, resulting in a $60 truck roll fee.

DO NOT Tamper with the fiber line or attempt to relocate your equipment by yourself. If you want to relocate your fiber line please give us a call to schedule a time to relocate it.

DO NOT try to “reconfigure” your UTOPIA Fiber device. This can also erase the configuration on your equipment and may require a technician to come out and fix it, resulting in a $60 truck roll fee.

If you have any more questions about the equipment or your internet in general please don’t hesitate to reach out to our awesome customer service team at (801) 613 3880 or support@utopiafiber.com.
